- Define abstract noun.
- How can using an abstract noun make you piece better? Explain.
Investigate:
- Watch the video on nouns vs. abstract nouns. (found in resources)
- Summarize the video into notes. Be sure to include three main points
- Visit the link that is located in resources section. (Blue button in resources)
- In your notebook record:
- The two most important things in the first paragraph
- How to recognize an abstract noun
- Record one of the examples given.
- Copy two common abstract nouns for each category (be sure to label each category)
- Copy down all the suffixes that are typically used with abstract nouns.
Practice:
- Create an acrostic of you name.
- With each letter of your name, identify an abstract noun. For example, Sally (S-smart)
- Next to each abstract noun, draw a concrete noun that represents the abstract noun.
- Staple in to notebook

- Define the three parts of thesis.
- Does a thesis always have to look like the formula that has been taught? Why or why not?
- Work through the school mascot PowerPoint. (found in resources)
- Complete the mascot worksheet. (found in resources)
- In notebook answer the following questions in your notebook:
- Using your criteria about your mascot, which three criteria seem to go together best.
- Discuss two abstract nouns that could represent all three of the criteria that you chose.
- Topic + Claim + Verb + Abstract Noun = Thesis (record in notebook)
- Work through the arguments chart worksheet. (found in resources)
- Be sure to look at the example that is used.
- Using the info about your mascot, fill in the chart.
- Go back and look at the article you based you On-Demand around. Construct a thesis based on that.
- Choose three topics below and construct a thesis using the new formula:
- The length of school days
- Driving age
- Dating age
- The opportunity to take college classes at the high school
- GMOs in our foods
- Requiring portion sizes in fast food restaurants
- Funding for women athletics
- Video game connection to violence
- Parental controls on TV and movies
- Free higher education
